2010-08-02 Yarra Park 3680
This is a permanent feature at the north east corner of Yarra Park. In the absence of signs and parking attendants, cars head up here to exit the park, find it is blocked, do hair raising circuits around this little tree and dodge other cars on the way back. Dangerous too!

Locals have marked some missing and damaged trees for replacement, or at least are begging the MCC to replace them.

These three damaged trees are right next to one of the historic Wurundjeri trees. What chance does it have?

The tiny halo of grass around this Wurundjeri tree shows just how much disrespect we have for the sacred when we are rushing to get home from the football.

The erosion pours mud down onto the apron of the MCG and blocks the storm water drains. In heavy rain the drains block and the backwash of water causes even more erosion.

Another bit of history in Yarra Park. This was the cabman's shelter which once stood opposite the Grand Hotel (now the Windsor Hotel and soon to be the Windsor Tower.) History under threat from all sides. Surely we are not barbarians.

The cabman's shelter is included in the Heritage Register of Victoria. So now is Yarra Park after a long struggle led by the National Trust.

Heritage registration or not, the cabman's shelter is a lonely little gem seen only by regular users of Yarra Park and the car drivers rushing off home from the footy.

This is in the centre of our beautiful city, part of Victoria's heritage, a historic gem, recreation park for thousands of nearby residents and hundreds of thousands on big occasions. The lungs of the city. Choked!

There are only two tiny areas of the park cordoned off from cars. Yet the whole of the park is churned to mud.
