Essays on various aspects of Victoria's history. Includes two articles which have some relevance to East Melbourne 1. Empires of Leaves: Tea Traders in Late Nineteenth-century and Edwardian Melbourne by Peter Griggs. Tea merchants Robert Harper (Jolimont Terrace c.1870s), James Griffiths (17 Clarendon Street c.1907) and Lowe Kong Meng (206 Clarendon Street c.1866-1875) whose companies are mentioned, were all residents of East Melbourne at one time. 2. Frankenstein, Convicts and Wide-awake Geniuses: The Life and Death of Charles Brentani by Douglas Wilkie. Charles Brentani's widow, Ann, built a pair of terrace houses at 159-161 Grey Street in 1881 (now demolished). The article explains where the money came from.
