Dr Merrilyn Murnane AM, a long-time East Melbourne resident, has published a book about the first women doctors in the USA, UK and Australia: Honourable Healers: Pioneering Women Doctors: Elizabeth Blackwell, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Constance Stone.

This talk will focus on the life and work of Constance Stone who lived for a time in East Melbourne.  As well as being the first woman to be registered as a doctor in Australia she was the prime mover in the establishment of
the Queen Victoria Hospital for Women and Children.  T
he Victorian Medical Women’s Society, which still continues, was another of her ideas which was so important in bringing those pioneering women doctors together.
